Located in the heart of downtown Olathe, Johnson County Square transforms the site of the former courthouse into a vibrant, flexible civic green space between the new courthouse and the county administration building. Landworks Studio partnered with Johnson County Administration and the courthouse design-build team to engage the public and guide a visioning and master planning process for this new signature destination.

Through community surveys, stakeholder input, and collaboration with a dedicated steering committee, Landworks Studio developed a phased master plan that blends the site's deep historical roots with modern civic life. The plan reflects key community priorities including:
A multi-use pavilion for events, performances, weddings, and picnics
An artistic playground for all ages (future phase)
An educational and historical plaza for monuments and storytelling
An open lawn for passive recreation and community gatherings
Iconic public art and unique pedestrian lighting
A shaded tree grove and wide circulation paths to support festivals and markets
Completed features include a central green for concerts, yoga, kite flying, or informal gatherings, as well as Rotary Tree Grove, pedestrian lighting aligned with courthouse aesthetics, and strong seasonal appeal for everyday use and special events.
Johnson County Square now stands as a symbol of revitalization and shared community identity—a public space for celebration, education, and connection.
